Our pick this week is like Flashback with zombies, Limbo without the cuteness… A great looking puzzle platformer that puts you in the shoes of a survivor of the zombie apocalypse. The Walking Dead on cocaine basically, it’s more about running and dodging raging zombies than long conversations about the human condition with your fellow companions.
Our pick this week is, Deadlight.
“Another zombie game, really?!” Yes, I hear you. But hear me out.
This is not a FPS, you don’t have big guns… you’ll be lucky if you actually have one and facing more than two zombies is the best way to finish as the main course unless you start running.
The game is set in 1986, you are Randall Wayne, a zombie apocalypse survivor in Seattle. After the first cutscene (comic-style cutscenes… always appreciated), you learn that you’re part of a small group that is being separated in an intent to runaway from a horde of zombies knocking on the door. You’re left on your own and you’ll have to run, crawl, jump, climb, roll on the ground and through doors to find shelter.
On your way, you’ll find many clues about what might have caused this situation and you’ll meet other struggling survivors. Exploration is the main aspect of this game, the “Flashback” inspiration is pretty clear.
The narrative is driven by Randall’s search for his wife and daughter, you’re given glimpses of the past through his trouble thoughts to start figuring out what might have happened to them… And that Randall might also be losing his mind.
Take a look at it in our gameplay video :
Look at those graphics – just perfect. The artwork done is admirable and mix that with a dynamic camera, it’s just a feast for the eyes. Deadlight shines through its atmosphere and backgrounds… some building ruins over here and always, always zombies!
It’s a short trip, you’ll finish Deadlight in about 4hrs approximately but it’s a fun experience, inspired by one of the greatest platforms games on the 90s – Flashback.
