Bastion is a game that has been on our to-do list for a while… We heard from many gamers that it’s pretty incredible but it just looked as your average action role playing game which is why we only recently tried it.
It only took a few minutes to get us completely hooked and here is why.
To be honest, your first steps in Bastion are not that original… You play as “The Kid“, this little white-haired guy, in a world destroyed by something called the Great Calamity. Your job seems pretty straightforward, restore peace and order, in this world that looks like its made from islands floating in the sky.
You quickly get your first weapon, a massive hammer, learn how to dodge stuff by rolling and off you go – hacking and slashing your way through levels.
Now, where Bastion stands out, is definitely on the narrator’s voice. Imagine a deep bad-ass soprano reacting to your actions and telling you more about the whys and hows of this strange universe you’re evolving in. Picture yourself playing this game on your couch with Robert De Niro next to you reacting to each level and action. So cool. I know, it doesn’t sound revolutionary, but check out the gameplay video below to see what we’re talking about.
The gameplay shows its true colours as you level up – you get more weapons, primary and secondary (think sword and bow) – plus a nice little special power (my favorite was calling a minion to give me a hand). Killing enemies and destroying boxes reward you with elixirs that you can use to upgrade your equipment. As you go deeper into the game, you’ll also find totems that will make enemies harder to beat who will drop better rewards. Gameplay evolves as you see fit, trying out different loadouts and totems to create a brand new experience for each level.
And to finalize this perfect touch, the graphics and music are just spectacular. It glows with colours and details while bathing in immersive sound.
A must. You need to play Bastion, it’s an unique experience that we’re pretty sure you’ll love.
