Z-Nation, The Walking Dead, iZombie… The brain-eaters abominations are definitely “in” these days and there are unfortunately quite a lot titles who try to ride the wave, and fail.
But fear not, State of Decay : Year One – the deluxe edition of the 2013 version – does not fall in that category.
State of Decay : Year One is a mix of different gameplays : a sandbox game where you’ll have to fight horde of zombies to survive, a RPG where you can loot and equip better weapons and tools and finally a resource management/strategy game where you’ll have to build a HQ with its relevant upgrades (sleeping quarters, defenses, dining hall…)… and manage your fellow brothers in arms.
That’s the whole originality of the game and one of its strongest aspects : the other survivals. You’ll have to save some, sacrifice some, take them on loot expeditions and also make sure their morale is holding up by addressing their problems. It doesn’t sound that exciting but it clearly helps to build enough emotion for you to care.
Think GTA but with looting – you’ll find a lot of cars on the road and you’ll have to be careful about the fuel and their damage – the rest of the time, just make sure you hit the head.
Here is a short gameplay video :
It has its flaws, quite a few graphical bugs here and there, but its definitely worth your time. Check it out.
